In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have uncovered a 61-million-year-old continent hidden beneath Greenland’s vast ice sheet. This finding, announced by an international team of geologists and climatologists, has the potential to reshape our understanding of Earth’s geological history and the processes that shaped its surface.

The ancient continent, now termed “Greenlandia,” was identified through advanced ice-penetrating radar technology and seismic surveys. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen led the exploration, working in collaboration with NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). The continent’s age and composition were determined by analyzing rock samples retrieved from deep beneath the ice.

The team’s findings suggest that Greenlandia could provide invaluable insights into the ancient climatic conditions and geological transformations that occurred over millions of years. This discovery also opens new avenues for research into how massive ice sheets interact with underlying landmasses, potentially influencing global sea levels and climate patterns.

The research team plans to conduct further expeditions to Greenland to continue studying the continent’s structure and history. They hope that ongoing research will reveal more about the formation and evolution of ancient landmasses and the dynamic processes driving Earth’s geological activity.

As the ice continues to melt due to climate change, previously inaccessible areas might reveal more hidden chapters of our planet’s history, making discoveries like Greenlandia ever more crucial in our quest to understand Earth’s past and predict its future.
