About 19,000 people are currently held in prisons in Afghanistan, Habibullah Badar, deputy head of the Office of the Prison Administration in Afghanistan, has said.

“There are about 19,000 detainees including 800 women in various jails of provinces and districts of the country,” a local television channel Tolonews quoted Badar on Wednesday as saying.

The official said that some foreign nationals have been held in Afghanistan prisons but did not identify their nationalities.

Badar also denied reports of torturing and mistreatment of prisoners in Afghan jails.
