Azerbaijan has solidified its position as Israel’s largest oil supplier, a development that underscores the strategic importance of the Caspian nation in the global energy market. According to recent trade reports, Azerbaijan‘s oil exports to Israel have surged in 2024, outpacing those of other major suppliers.

This burgeoning trade relationship is a reflection of the deepening economic ties between the two countries. Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company (SOCAR) has played a pivotal role in securing this position, capitalizing on the country’s abundant oil reserves and its proximity to major shipping routes. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, a key infrastructure project, has been

instrumental in transporting Azerbaijani oil to the Mediterranean, from where it is shipped to Israel.

BTC almost fulfil the 40% of Israel oil consumptions. In 2023 Azerbaijan oil sale to Israel is estimated almost 1.4 billion USD.

Israel, a country with limited domestic energy resources, has long relied on imports to meet its oil needs. Azerbaijan’s light, high-quality crude has become particularly attractive for Israel’s refining sector, which requires consistent and reliable supply lines. The trade between the two nations has not only boosted Azerbaijan’s economy but also reinforced Israel’s energy security.

However, this growing energy relationship comes at a time of increasing geopolitical tension. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, coupled with pressure from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Azerbaijan to reconsider its economic ties with Israel, has added a layer of complexity to the situation.

Despite these challenges, both nations have continued to emphasize the importance of their energy partnership. Azerbaijani officials have highlighted the non-political nature of their oil exports, focusing on the economic benefits for both countries. Israel, in turn, has expressed gratitude for the steady supply of oil, which has been critical to its energy strategy.

As Azerbaijan continues to expand its role in Israel’s energy market, the long-term implications of this relationship will be closely watched by both regional and global actors. The situation remains fluid, with potential shifts in policy that could impact on the future of this significant trade partnership.
