The government of Bangladesh has announced an extension of the current curfew as the Supreme Court prepares to deliver a crucial ruling on the controversial civil service quota system.

More than 133 protesters have been killed by police so for due to the unrest started last week. The people demand resignation from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The curfew, initially implemented last week following a series of protests, will now remain in effect until further notice. Authorities have cited concerns over potential unrest and the need to maintain public order during this critical period.

The civil service quota system, which reserves a significant percentage of government jobs for specific groups, including freedom fighters’ descendants, women, and ethnic minorities, has been a contentious issue for years. Critics argue that the system is outdated and discriminatory, while supporters believe it ensures fair representation and opportunities for historically marginalized communities.

In recent months, the debate over the quota system has intensified, leading to nationwide protests and clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement. The government has urged citizens to remain calm and respect the curfew, emphasizing that public safety is the top priority.

Human rights organizations have expressed concern over the prolonged curfew and its impact on daily life and civil liberties. They have called on the government to ensure that any measures taken are proportionate and respect the rights of citizens.
