South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, as the current chair of the BRICS group of nations, convened an extraordinary joint meeting on Tuesday to discuss the escalating situation in Gaza, where Israeli forces have launched a devastating offensive against Hamas.
The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, South Africa and China joined the virtual meeting, along with the invited leaders of Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, representing a diverse range of regional and global perspectives.
The meeting aimed to explore ways to end the violence and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where more than 13000 people have been killed and thousands more injured or displaced by Israeli airstrikes and ground operations.
