The Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip opened on Wednesday for the first time since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, allowing dozens of wounded Palestinians to receive medical treatment in Egypt and hundreds of foreign nationals to leave the besieged enclave.
According to the Gaza border authority, Egypt agreed to let in 81 of the most badly wounded Palestinians, who were transported by ambulances to the crossing point. A medical official in the Egyptian city of El Arish said that a field hospital was set up in the nearby city of Sheikh Zuweid to receive the injured and that medical teams were present at the crossing to examine the cases and determine which hospitals they would be sent to.
