The Council of the European Union has approved its first-ever military support for Armenia under the European Peace Facility (EPF), allocating 10 million euros ($10.8 million) to bolster the Armenian Armed Forces. This historic decision was announced in a statement released by the council on July 22.

The financial assistance aims to enhance Armenia‘s defense capabilities and support stability in the region. The EPF is an initiative designed to support peace and stability through military and defense-related assistance to partner countries.

The funds will be used for a variety of purposes, including the procurement of non-lethal equipment, training, and advisory services. The support is intended to address Armenia’s immediate defense needs while promoting long-term stability and resilience.

Armenian officials have welcomed the EU’s decision, emphasizing the importance of international support in the face of ongoing regional challenges.

The EU’s decision comes amidst heightened tensions in the South Caucasus region, where Armenia has faced security threats and conflicts with neighboring Azerbaijan. The European Union has been actively involved in mediating peace efforts and promoting dialogue between the two countries.

The European Peace Facility, established in March 2021, is a new funding instrument that allows the EU to support military and defense efforts in partner countries. The EPF is designed to prevent conflicts, build peace, and strengthen international security.

As the EU’s first military assistance to Armenia under the EPF, this move signifies a deepening of the strategic partnership between the European Union and Armenia. It also reflects the EU’s ongoing commitment to supporting its Eastern partners in building resilient and secure societies.

The implementation of this assistance package will be closely monitored to ensure transparency and accountability. The EU and Armenia will work together to ensure that the funds are used effectively to achieve the desired outcomes.

The EU’s support for Armenia marks a new chapter in their bilateral relations, setting the stage for further cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including security, defense, and regional stability.
