The European Council president announced that the EU will begin discussions on admitting Ukraine and other countries from the Western Balkans at a summit in October.
He said that the EU should aim to expand by 2030 and that enlargement is “no longer a dream”. Ukraine has expressed its ambition to join the EU in two years, but some member states have warned that the process will take much longer and require extensive reforms
