A small convoy of 20 aid trucks entered the Gaza Strip from Egypt on Saturday, carrying medicine and food supplies for the Palestinians who have been suffering under an Israeli blockade and bombardment for two weeks.

The trucks, belonging to the Egyptian Red Crescent, crossed the Rafah border point after a week of intense negotiations involving the US, Israel, Egypt and the UN.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, as Israel has sealed off the territory and killed hundreds of Gazans including children, women and elders.

The Rafah crossing is the only lifeline for Gaza to the outside world, as Israel has closed all other border crossings and imposed a naval blockade on the coastal enclave.

Before the current conflict erupted, about 500 trucks a day used to cross Rafah, carrying goods and humanitarian aid. Under the agreement with Israel, only 20 trucks will be allowed on Saturday, and no fuel will be included in the consignments.
