Israel has recalled its ambassador to South Africa, Lior Keinan, for consultations after the South African government expressed its “deep concern” over the escalating violence in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire.
The Israeli government has been facing a starch diplomatic setback in Latin American countries and South Africa.
South Africa, which has a large Muslim minority and a history of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, has been vocal in its criticism of Israel’s military operation in Gaza, which has killed more than 13000 Palestinians.
