Japan prepares to start the release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, August 24, following a controversial decision that has sparked opposition and concern from neighboring countries and environmental groups.  The water release, which is expected to take about 30 years to complete, is part of Japan’s plan to decommission the plant that was severely damaged by a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011.   The disaster caused three reactor meltdowns and the release of large amounts of radioactive material into the environment.     Massive opposition from various environmental and climate activists against the release of this water.
