A tsunami advisory was issued on Thursday after a powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 7.1 hit off the coast of southern Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quake registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and was centred off the eastern coast of Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu at a depth of about 30 kilometres.

Japan, located within the Pacific “ring of fire,” is considered one of the most earthquake-prone regions globally.

The agency issued a tsunami advisory, predicting waves of up to 1 metre along the southern coast of Kyushu and the nearby island of Shikoku. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stay away from coastal regions and seek higher ground. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating emergency response efforts to ensure public safety.

No immediate reports of significant damage or casualties have been received, but the impact of the earthquake and potential tsunami is still being assessed. Japan’s robust infrastructure and disaster preparedness measures are expected to mitigate the effects of this natural disaster.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities.
