The Palestinian Authority (PA) has welcomed the first-ever visit of a Saudi ambassador to the occupied Palestinian territories, calling it a historic milestone for developing fraternal relations between the two countries.
Nayef al-Sudairi, who is also the Saudi ambassador to Jordan, arrived in the West Bank on Tuesday through the Karama crossing from Jordan. He is expected to present his credentials to PA President Mahmoud Abbas and meet with other senior Palestinian officials, including Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh and Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki.
Al-Sudairi was appointed as the non-resident envoy to Palestine and consul general in Jerusalem last month, amid reports that Saudi Arabia is considering official diplomatic relations with Israel in response to US pressure.
