A Qatari court has sentenced eight former Indian Navy officers to death on charges of espionage, sparking outrage and shock from India. The men, who were working for a private defense consultancy firm in Qatar, were arrested in August 2022 and accused of spying for a foreign state.
The details of the charges and the evidence against them have not been made public.
The death penalty is a rare and harsh punishment in Qatar, which has only executed three people since 1976. The last execution took place in 2003 when a Qatari national was hanged for murder.
