Scotland’s first minister Humza Yousaf has shared a heartbreaking video of his mother-in-law, who is stuck in Gaza as Israel continues its military operation against Hamas. Elizabeth El-Nakla, a retired nurse from Dundee, travelled to Gaza last week with her husband Maged to visit their relatives, but now they are unable to leave the besieged territory.
In the video, which Yousaf posted on Twitter, El-Nakla tearfully asks: “Where is humanity? Where’s people’s hearts in the world to let this happen in this day and age?” She says that she and her husband are staying in Deir Al-Balah, south of Gaza City, where more than a million people have been ordered by Israel to evacuate within 24 hours. She fears for the lives of those who cannot leave, especially the patients in the nearby hospital.
Yousaf said that his mother-in-law, like the majority of Gazans, has nothing to do with Hamas. He condemned Israel’s actions as “collective punishment” and urged the international community to intervene and stop the violence.
