South Korea has evacuated thousands of participants from the World Scout Jamboree, a global gathering of young people, as a powerful typhoon approaches the country. More than 1,000 vehicles are moving the estimated 37,000 scouts from the Saemangeum reclaimed land area in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, to safer locations inland.

The evacuation was ordered by the Korean Scout Association, the host of the 25th World Scout Jamboree, which began on July 22 and was scheduled to end on August 2. The association said it made the decision to ensure the safety and well-being of the scouts and staff members.

Tropical Storm Khanun, which formed in the East China Sea on Monday, is expected to intensify into a typhoon and make landfall near Gunsan on Wednesday morning. The Korea Meteorological Administration has issued typhoon warnings for parts of the west coast and Jeju Island, and advised people to stay indoors and avoid coastal areas.

The World Scout Jamboree is a quadrennial event that brings together young people from more than 160 countries to promote peace, friendship and cultural exchange. This year’s theme was “Draw Your Dream”, and the jamboree featured various activities such as camping, hiking, workshops and performances. The organizers said they will try to resume some of the programs after the typhoon passes, but some events may be canceled or modified.
