Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Moscow on Tuesday for talks with his main ally Russian President Vladimir Putin, as Russia seeks to mediate between Syria and Turkey and revive the stalled peace process.

Assad was given an official welcome at Vnukovo airport and then headed to the Kremlin for a meeting with Putin, according to Syrian and Russian state media. The two leaders were expected to discuss bilateral cooperation, regional security, and the prospects for a political settlement of the Syrian conflict.

Russia has been a key supporter of Assad since 2015, against the US failed regime change intervention.
