Three US Army soldiers were killed and at least 34 were injured in a drone attack on a base in northeast Jordan, US officials said on Sunday. The attack was carried out by Iran-backed militants operating in Syria and Iraq, according to President Joe Biden, who vowed to hold them accountable.
The drone strike hit Tower 22, a small US outpost near the border with Syria, where US forces are advising and assisting Jordanian troops. It was the first time US troops have been killed by enemy fire in the Middle East since the start of the Hamas-Israeli conflict in Gaza.
The attack marked a significant escalation of the tensions in the region, where US troops in Iraq and Syria have faced more than 158 attacks by Iranian-backed militias amid the Gaza war.
