A tragic incident unfolded in the English Channel early today when a boat carrying dozens of migrants sank off the French coast, resulting in the deaths of 12 people, including six children and a pregnant woman. The local prosecutor’s office confirmed that 10 of the deceased were female, with only two male victims.

The boat, overloaded and reportedly carrying far more people than it could safely manage, encountered severe difficulties off Cape Gris-Nez, near Boulogne-sur-Mer. According to the French coast guard, the bottom of the vessel “ripped open,” causing it to take on water rapidly.

Rescue efforts were swift but challenging, with more than 50 people being pulled from the water. However, two survivors are currently in critical condition, fighting for their lives.

Officials have pointed out that fewer than eight of the migrants on board were wearing life jackets, exacerbating the tragedy. This incident has sparked renewed concerns about the dangers faced by those attempting the perilous journey across the English Channel in hopes of reaching the United Kingdom.

As authorities continue to investigate the exact circumstances that led to this disaster, the focus remains on identifying the victims and providing aid to the survivors. This tragic event underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis surrounding migration across the Channel and the desperate measures that many are willing to take in pursuit of safety and a better life.
