Former President Donald Trump appeared in a federal court in Miami on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to 37 federal criminal charges that he unlawfully kept national- documents when he left office and lied to officials who sought to recover them.

Trump, who is the first former president to be charged with federal crimes, was booked and fingerprinted before his arraignment but did not have a mugshot taken. He was allowed to leave court without conditions or travel restrictions and no cash bond was required.

The charges, brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith, allege that Trump stored boxes containing classified documents in various locations at his Mar-a-Lago estate, including a ballroom, a bathroom and shower, his office, his bedroom, and a storage room.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has accused the Biden administration of targeting him for political reasons.

The case is likely to play out over the coming months as Trump campaigns to win back the presidency in a November 2024 election.

This is the second courtroom visit for Trump in recent months. In April, he pleaded not guilty to state charges in New York stemming from a hush-money payment to a porn star.
