Ukraine has announced a new initiative to help the cargo ships that have been stranded in its Black Sea ports since the start of the war with Russia in February 2022. The Ukrainian navy said on Thursday that it would open a “humanitarian corridor” in the Black Sea to allow the ships to leave the ports and resume their trade activities. The corridor would mainly be used for container ships and grain and agricultural products, which are vital for Ukraine’s economy.
The humanitarian corridor is expected to start operating within days, according to a spokesperson for the Ukrainian navy. The international community has welcomed the initiative and expressed its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has also endorsed the proposed routes for the corridor and urged all parties to respect them.
