A group of US Marines stationed in Türkiye was attacked by an angry mob on Monday in what authorities are calling a serious incident of anti-American sentiment. The mob, consisting of several dozen individuals, confronted the Marines in a public area, hurling accusations that the American military has “Palestinian blood” on its hands.

The attack took place in Izmir city, where the Marines members disembarked from the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp, which arrived earlier that day during its deployment in the Mediterranean Sea. The confrontation quickly escalated, with some members of the crowd physically assaulting the troops.

The Marines were swiftly evacuated to a secure location, and all are reported to be safe. Turkish authorities have detained a number of individuals involved in the incident and are conducting an investigation into the motivations behind the attack.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, a group claiming responsibility for the attack said that they targeted the US Marines in protest against American military support for Israel. The group accused the United States of being complicit in the suffering of the Palestinian people, stating that American troops have “Palestinian blood” on their hands.

This incident comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, particularly regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Recent developments, including clashes in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, have sparked widespread protests across the Middle East. Anti-American sentiment has been on the rise, fueled by perceptions of US bias in favor of Israel.

The attack on the Marines highlights the volatile nature of these sentiments and the potential risks faced by US personnel abroad.
