The US has announced that it is sending additional military support to Israel in response to the attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas which has killed more than 1,000 people and taken dozens of hostages.
President Joe Biden spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday and expressed his solidarity with Israel’s right to defend itself from the “unprecedented and appalling assault” by Hamas, the White House said in a statement.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he had ordered several steps to strengthen the US posture in the region, including moving the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group closer to the eastern Mediterranean and augmenting US Air Force fighter aircraft squadrons in the Middle East.
