The United States has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have called for a humanitarian pause in the Gaza Strip, where millions of people are facing a dire humanitarian crisis amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes that kills more than 17000 Palestinians.

In Friday’s vote, 13 of the 15 Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution, with the U.K. abstaining.

The vote took place two days after UN Secretary-General António Guterres invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter to push for a ceasefire.
