A large wildfire has broken out in Bulgaria, exacerbated by the extreme heatwave currently gripping the Balkans.

There are also nearly a dozen active wildfires in North Macedonia.

The most widespread one is on the Serta Mountain, in the region of Negotino. About 700-800 hectares of pine forest are ablaze, and the fire is still not under control.

Authorities have deployed significant resources, including hundreds of firefighters, helicopters, and firefighting planes, to combat the wildfire. Neighboring countries, including Greece and Serbia, have offered assistance as part of a coordinated regional response. Despite these efforts, the fire continues to threaten residential areas and critical infrastructure.

The wildfire coincides with a severe heatwave affecting the entire Balkan Peninsula. Temperatures have soared above 40°C (104°F) in several areas, setting new records and creating hazardous conditions. Health officials have issued warnings about the risks of heatstroke and dehydration, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children.

The wildfire has already forced the evacuation of several villages and has destroyed large swathes of forest, farmland, and wildlife habitats. The smoke and ash have deteriorated air quality, posing additional health risks. Local authorities are urging residents to remain indoors and avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
